The city of Maastricht
Maastricht is located in the south of the Netherlands, close to both the Belgian and German borders. It is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, as it was first established over 2,050 years ago by the Romans, when the city was known as “Traiectum ad Mosam”, meaning “Road along the river Mosa (Maas)”. In the Middle Ages its strategic location in the Dutch Republic led to a number of important fortifications around the city. Important events in Maastricht’s recent history include the signing of the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, which created the European Union and led to the creation of the euro. Evidence of Maastricht’s rich history can be found all across town. Maastricht is home to some 120,000 inhabitants, of which more than 10,000 students who study at one of faculties and schools of Maastricht University.
More information on Maastricht can be found on the website of Tourist Office Maastricht.
